our heart and the word.

“I hate the double-minded, but I love your law”. Psalm 119:113

Interesting how apparently unrelated things appear side by side in this verse. David’s expressing his frustration towards people of double-mindedness, who cannot remain focussed or committed to something, who are constantly wavering between opinions. And, at the same time, his love to the law, or the Word, of God.

Even though the connection between the two thoughts seems a bit out there, I think David was on to something.

The writer of Hebrews, when exhorting the people to remain steady in the confidence they had in the beginning, and not to loose heart in unbelief, throws this verse right in the middle of the mix:

“For the word of God is living and powerful, sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrews 4:11.

This might be a simple truth, but it’s of enormous significance for us. The steadiness of your heart is directly proportional to the sharpness of the Word of God that is penetrating your life. If you find yourself wavering in doubt or unbelief, having a hard time keeping the course – expose your heart to the Word.

I guarantee that all doubt, confusion, fear, disillusion – it all fades away when the Light of His Word shines on our hearts. This is the season for us to hate double-mindedness, and love HIS WORD.
